Sweet (February)

The companies Shakespeare had shares in were composed of players from all over. He wrote parts for the leads, we hear their distinctive voices sometimes. Himself sounded Warwickshire, could talk all February. His subordinate clauses shock like his direct speech. Dante is ‘dolce’. Jonson called Shakespeare ‘sweet’. Ben seems to mean not just the poetry but how Will himself sounded to a listener. We start hearing a poet’s voice when listening at length, their speech patterns. The reason Shakespeare is not a committee is he speaks consistently ‘sweet’, such energy and purpose, all through the reigns of Elizabeth and James.
