Driveway (May)

What are cars but mobile rooms of our house? And  driveways but landing pads of sci-fi lives? New houses fronted by multiplex garages have other rooms out the back. Driveways of perfect concrete wait for take-off or landing. We are too many, say the cars. Built-in obsolescence shows no sign of ending. Other driveways keep up pretences, behind gates curve up to the door, decorations in a period movie. Thinner driveways along fences are abandoned, householders parking angularly across lawns or ant-line-like in gutters. Driveways convert into BBQ areas. Trees self-seeded in May reclaim driveways. Clapped-out bombs grow upholstery grass.
