Arthrodesis (January)

Curious how an unknown medical term enters your life with a mild jolt. Word of the Day: Arthrodesis. My doctor said this word the way other people say good morning. It’s not too serious. As he said himself, it’s not bunions. One is almost grateful it’s only (potentially) arthrodesis. My stubbed and fractured left big toe is, six months later, healed but does not enjoy the mobility of its opposite number. January diagnosis, courtesy of x-rays and observation, is that the bones may have fused. I can still walk, dance, and stand on one foot. Be grateful for small mercies.
