El
Niño has not had its undesirable effect. March can be the hottest month, an end
to heatwaves before equinox, but except for a few scorchers this summer has
been mild. Cool mornings gave respite from fears of intensity, that last summer
kept us home from work. A ‘toothbrush’ grevillea died but pink lilies came out
of the ground on purple-green stalks. We cannot remember putting the corms into
the soil. Great ensembles of trumpets were awoken by nights of heavy rain. Some
of them have singed, yet they announce themselves, against all odds. Next
summer’s heat may be impossible.
