Seven
floats designed by children were in this week’s parade. They featured “animals,
family, pizza-eating robots and the computer game Minecraft.” (The Age, page 3) Evolution of the float from display
on back of truck-tray to kitsch tropical island on concealed wheels, was left
to the adults. We children stood in polite lines on the bitumen footpath.
Commercial necessity was at the wheel of Moomba in the daggy days of Zig and
Zag. No one thought to ask children, who were there to be entertained and the
parade almost went out of existence about the time government floated the
dollar.
