This January attention
is drawn to a tall metal sculpture at Byron Bay by the town’s indignant locals.
The sculpture’s inspired by the hundreds of birds that circle the nearby
lighthouse. The locals, imaginatively, can only see a dick. ‘Vault’, the
abstract construction in the former city square, inspired Melburnians to
re-name it ‘Yellow Peril’, drawing out simultaneously their fear of Asians and
modern sculpture. ‘Vault’’s final resting place is an arts precinct courtyard,
where it won’t offend popular taste. Perhaps Byron Bay Council will move around
the aluminium bird sculpture in similar fashion. The lighthouse remains where
it is.
