Trumpet (October)

October trumpets Miles beside the counter-terrorist concrete blocks on the footpath at Southern Cross. He knows most of ‘Kind of Blue’. He has the double-sided tartan coat double-folded to catch the kangaroo-and-emu fifties, the platypus twenties, the lyrebird tens, echidna fives. Is that ‘Ticket to Ride’? ‘Day Tripper’? Peak-hour only stops to see red. ‘Regret’? It’s New Order unplugged minimalist. I put down my one note on the Stewart cross-weave. He smiles between breaths, that’s breakfast. Last Wednesday I heard my favourite in his repertoire, adjacent to terror block no. 10, his heavenly abstract gap-filled rendition of ‘Move On Up’.
