Giovanni Battista Piranesi’s
massive series of etchings The Shopping Centres baffles and inspires in equal
measure. Cliff walls of windowless majesty, surely oversized, confront the eye.
Indescribable machinery on wheels herds below in a constant struggle for space.
Trees seem superfluous beside these mountain-buildings, that proliferate in
every direction with substantial form, claiming more and more land. Neither are
Piranesi’s interiors for the faint-hearted. Awesome vaults of railed and ribbed
storeys are illumined by sunlight filtering through gigantic arched glass
ceilings c/- Big July Seizure Developers. Moving staircases transport milling
spenders upward to higher levels, promising beyond next corners more.
