Piranesi (July)

Giovanni Battista Piranesi’s massive series of etchings The Shopping Centres baffles and inspires in equal measure. Cliff walls of windowless majesty, surely oversized, confront the eye. Indescribable machinery on wheels herds below in a constant struggle for space. Trees seem superfluous beside these mountain-buildings, that proliferate in every direction with substantial form, claiming more and more land. Neither are Piranesi’s interiors for the faint-hearted.
