Carol (December)
The Department has instructed schools not to teach carols unless they are “common societally recognised music”. Is a carol a hymn? When does a carol stop being Hark the Herald Angels and start being Jingle Bells? Do the do-gooders in the Department offer guidelines? Song is still acceptable. Happiness is permitted. At school in future there will be silent day without Silent Night. Children opting for carols may sing them in the shelter shed at lunchtime, preferably in December. Meanwhile, schools that removed carols from their concerts reversed the decision, when it was agreed carols are common societally recognised music.
